Research Assistant position, starting summer 2024, is available in the lab of Dr. Jacob Jaszczak at New Mexico State University. The primary research focus of the lab explores the development and tuning of sensory systems, which will advance the design of treatments for chronic pain and developmental disorders.

Purpose:

The Jaszczak Lab seeks candidates for a 1+ year research assistant position, starting summer 2024. The successful applicant will support research projects lead by the PI (Dr. Jacob Jaszczak). Duties will include maintenance of Drosophila stocks, molecular biology, bioinformatic analysis, training of undergraduate students, purchasing, and other administrative work. The position is initially available for 1 year with the possibility of additional years of support.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

The Jaszczak Lab leverages the powerful genetic tools of Drosophila melanogaster to explore how nervous systems are built and tuned. Every animal encounters a changing spectrum of sensory information during life, requiring the formation of unique behavioral responses. Disruption of neural function in the sensory system profoundly impacts many individuals, such as those with chronic pain or hyper-sensitivity in autism spectrum disorders. One of the lab’s central research objectives is to discover the developmental mechanisms which adapt behavioral responses to a dynamic environment. We meld neuroscience, microscopy, programing, and genetics into fundamental discoveries that will advance the design of treatments for chronic pain and developmental disorders.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biochemistry, or related field and 1-2 years research experience. (Lab experience gained as a student is valid).

Application Process:

Interested applicants should send an updated CV and short cover letter to Dr. Jacob Jaszczak Contact. The cover letter should explain why they are interested in the research subjects explored in the lab. The subject of the email should be “Research Assistant position”.
